Origem etimológica
«Na década de 1910, a vida musical lisboeta assistiu à consolidação dos concertos sinfónicos. No final de 1911 iniciaram-se no Teatro República os concertos da Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa, dirigidos por Pedro Blanch, e em 1913 David de Sousa instituiu no Teatro Politeama uma série paralela, por aquela que mais tarde ficaria conhecida como Orquestra Sinfónica de Lisboa, cuja direcção estaria entre 1918 e 1920 confiada a José Viana da Mota (1868-1948) e entre 1920 e 1925 a Joaquim Fernandes Fão (1894-1963). Trata-se de um episódio que assume uma importância central para a compreensão do ambiente cultural do período da I República, bem como para a história da música em Portugal, tendo em consideração o impulso que foi dado no sentido da actualização da vida musical portuguesa. De facto, estes concertos parecem ter desempenhado um papel importante na divulgação de um repertório orquestral bastante alargado e em grande parte ainda desconhecido do público lisboeta. Esta comunicação centra-se particularmente na série de concertos da Orquestra Sinfónica de Lisboa dirigida por Viana da Mota entre 1918 e 1920, recorrendo à imprensa periódica da época com o objectivo de conhecer não só o repertório apresentado, mas também a recepção dos concertos por parte de críticos e intelectuais (…)»

Recuperação da marca
A então ORQUESTRA SINFÓNICA DE LISBOA pretendia trazer ao público português alguma informação representativa das correntes estéticas da época, menos promovidas, bem como a divulgação do que de melhor se produzia em Portugal no domínio da composição musical, que atravessava uma tendência nacionalista (entenda-se o movimento estético da música erudita que sofria influência da música nacional de cariz tradicional, popular e até folclórico). É precisamente com este espírito de divulgação da produção contemporânea nacional que se resgata a marca ORQUESTRA SINFÓNICA DE LISBOA.
A nova ORQUESTRA SINFÓNICA DE LISBOA
A nova ORQUESTRA SINFÓNICA DE LISBOA é a recuperação da marca por parte da Orquestra Didática da Foco Musical. Com uma atividade intensa no domínio dos concertos para escolas, a Orquestra Didática sentia dificuldade em se libertar da conotação imposta pela marca que a liga aos seus Concertos Sinfónicos Participados. O título ORQUESTRA SINFÓNICA DE LISBOA permite a esta orquestra com um histórico de mais de 750 concertos em palco e mais de meio milhão de espectadores entre os concertos em Portugal e no Brasil, separar por completo o repertório e os concertos que nada têm a ver com o universo escolar.
The history of LISBON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
«In the 1910s, Lisbon’s musical life had seen the consolidation of symphonic concerts. At the end of 1911, concerts of the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Pedro Blanch, began at Teatro República and in 1913 David de Sousa instituted a parallel series at Teatro Politeama, for what would later be known as the Lisbon Symphony Orchestra, whose conduction would be entrusted to José Viana da Mota (1868-1948) between 1918 and 1920, and Joaquim Fernandes Fão (1894-1963) between 1920 and 1925. It is an episode that assumes a central importance for the understanding of the cultural environment of the period of the First Republic, as well as for the history of music in Portugal, considering the impulse that was given towards updating Portuguese musical life. In fact, these concerts seem to have played an important role in the dissemination of a very wide and largely unknown orchestral repertoire to the Lisbon public. This communication focuses particularly on the concert series of the Lisbon Symphony Orchestra conducted by Viana da Mota between 1918 and 1920 and , using the periodic press of the time with the aim of knowing not only the repertoire presented, but also the reception of concerts by critics and intellectuals (…) »

LISBON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA intended to bring to the Portuguese public some information representative of the aesthetic currents of the time, less promoted, as well as the dissemination of the best that was produced in Portugal in the field of musical composition, which was crossing a nationalist trend (understood here as the aesthetic movement of classical music that was influenced by national music of a traditional, popular, and even folklore nature). It is precisely with this spirit of dissemination of contemporary national production that LISBON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA is recovered.
The New LISBON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
LISBON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA is the baptism of an orchestra with a history of more than 750 concerts on stage and more than half a million members of an audience among concerts in Portugal and Brazil over the last 23 years. Under the former name of Didactic Orchestra, when in its domain of concert repertoire outside the school universe, it was undeniably the difficulty in freeing itself from the pedagogical connotation imposed by the brand that links it to its Participated Symphonic Concerts. With an intense activity in the field of school concerts, Foco Musical’s Orchestra definitely separates the two strands with the redemption of the title LISBON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA.
